CHEKHOV'S THE DUEL

Chekhhov's THE DUEL

A New Adaptation of Anton Chekhov's beloved novella

February 20 - March 27 2004

Berkeley City Club
2315 Durant Avenue

Central Works will open its third season at the Berkeley City Club with a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's beloved novella, The Duel. Set in a remote village on the coast of the Black Sea, Chekhov's tale tells the story of an inexorable confrontation between a lazy intellectual and a scientific zealot. Adapted for the stage by Gary Graves, directed by Bobby Weinapple, sound design by Gregory Scharpen, set design by Jeff Wincek, featuring Michael Cheng, Jennifer Fagundes*, Richard Frederick*, John Patrick Moore*, Michael Scott Shipley*, and Jan Zvaifler.
(* member Actors' Equity Association; an Equity approved project).

"Essentially a new Chekhov play, Gary Graves'...adaptation of the master's longest short story beautifully maintains its Chekhovian wry, wistful humor, humanly flawed characters and prescient social arguments... Robert Weinapple's smooth staging features an exceptionally strong Central Works cast."
--Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle

"Gary Graves’ script captures well Chekhov’s balance between darker passions and sublime humor, while Robert Weinapple’s detailed direction extracts vibrant, well-pitched performances in an alluring atmosphere punctuated by snatches of Romantic music and moody lighting."
--Robert Avila, San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Introducing a new Chekhov; Central Works adapts a short story to delightful end. Graves, the actors, and director Robert Weinapple bring out the humor and horror in the material deftly, and the result is a delightful and at times shocking piece of work."
--Sam Hurwitt, East Bay Express

"Central Works turns ‘The Duel’ into a gripping performance."
--Betsy Hunton, Berkeley Daily Planet

"A magnificent ‘Duel’;...a striking example of Central Works artistic objective."
--Jack Tucker, Contra Costa Times

"If you have an interest in new live theater, definitely plan to see this play, and keep your eye on Central Works."
--"Stan" Stansbury, East Bay Voice
